The monument
From 1961-1964, the Haus des Lehrers ("House of Teachers") was built on Alexanderplatz together with the corresponding Kongresshalle ("Congress Hall"). Hermann Henselmann chose a box form for the 12-storey building, which was a typical alternative to post-war modern skyscraper architecture. Influenced by contemporary Mexican murals, the building was given a monumental, multicoloured frieze by Walter Womacka.
The Congress Hall (now known as the bcc) is striking for its transparency, clear forms, and many interesting architectural details. The shiny aluminium dome can be seen from far away. A wide view of the cityscape opens out from the foyer. The combination of the bcc and the neighbouring House of Teachers forms an intense architectural ensemble on Alexanderplatz.
